The Challenge
NewSTEPs is the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL)’s national newborn screening resource center designed to provide data, technical assistance and training to newborn screening programs and assist states with quality improvement initiatives. Their website is an important tool in the newborn screening health community, but proved to be outdated and difficult to navigate.
The Process
NewSteps is a centralized data repository enabling the collection, analysis, and dissemination of longitudinal health and genomic data across newborn screening programs nationwide. The platform needed to empower public health professionals to contribute and analyze data across a wide range of newborn health screening factors. Working closely with my team, I helped establish an updated site map and wireframes that laid the foundation for a more intuitive, navigable experience — ensuring users could efficiently access data, explore resources, and find program support.
The Result
I led all UI design efforts for the website, translating the wireframes into polished high-fidelity mockups and an interactive prototype, while closely adhering to the client's established brand guidelines to maintain a consistent and professional visual identity throughout. I delivered into a comprehensive design system to ensure scalability and a smooth handoff to development.
